Proposal to Consolidate School Nutrition Programs and Move to the Department of Agriculture:
We wanted update you on a proposal included in Governor McAuliffe’s budget that is being considered by the Virginia legislature. The proposal is to develop a plan for transferring school nutrition programs to the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. As you know, our programs are currently in multiple agencies: the Virginia Department of Education, the Virginia Department of Health and the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services. The proposal is to streamline these programs and house all of them in the Department of Agriculture. The goal is to have all of the programs under one agency and to make the system more efficient for all of us.
This is still in the planning phase and still has to be approved by the General Assembly. The agencies involved are well aware this is a major undertaking and will not happen overnight. They have not yet determined a timeline for when this would take place. However, they have assured the SNA-VA that there will absolutely be stakeholder involvement throughout the process.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to SNA-VA leadership with any questions, concerns or comments. We will continue to keep you updated as this proposal progresses.
